Loving this weather
Yesterday was THE most perfect fall day! Sunny and upper 60's, dry and gorgeous. I decided to take the girls on a nature hike and do some of our homeschooling outdoors. We sat on a bench, read about frogs and then went looking for some in the creek.
After reading, we learned that frogs like to come out at night, and they do hibernate during the winter, so we didn't see any. But that didn't stop the girls from enjoying the walk and looking for holes that frogs might be sleeping in.
We had a picnic lunch with our friends Julie, Ethan and Ryan. After lots of running around, the kids got to make a pumpkin mask craft at the Nature Center.
It was one of those fun days that makes me glad to be a stay-at-home mom. :-)

The Easter bunny came early
and left some little surprises! At least, they certainly surprised me when I was cleaning out the garden this morning. There were 4-5 baby bunnies in the nest, and all but two hopped away. The kids have loved "loving" on the poor little ones who remained. We plan to release them in the woods across the street later today.

Nature Walk
We've had some fabulous fall weather lately. Sunday, I decided to take the girls on a nature walk through the woods behind the school across the street. There is a gravel path that they use for cross country meets.
We had a great time finding different shapes and colors of leaves and nuts. We even found a feather and a few wild flowers. Shortly into the walk we noticed a couple coming out with two cardboard boxes. Later on, a grandpa and little girl went by on their bikes. He stopped and asked if we saw where the people were with the boxes. His theory is that they found a pecan tree and were collecting nuts.
Cool! So we went home and I looked up pecan tree leaves and what their nuts look like. We went again today, with Doug, but didn't find any pecans. Oh well!
Here's the haul from Sunday:

A Baby is Born
One of the hummingbird eggs hatched! Hopefully the other egg will hatch soon, as well.
Here's a picture:

You can see the body with a few stragley feathers and the head is face down into the nest. I'll keep you posted! Maybe I'll catch a video when it is moving more.

An Egg-stra Special Suprise
This post is for you, mom. Guess what I found in our tree?

For you non-bird aficionados, it's a hummingbird nest. Our neighbors are super-excited! I am looking forward to peeking in on them from time to time and see how two little birds will fit in there.
From what I read online, the outer part of the nest is covered with moss and plant fibers and/or lichens. The inside is made of plant down and spider webs. Too cool!
