Surgery Update: Day 21

It's been 3 weeks since Sadie's TightRope surgery. Needless to say, we're just not where I thought we'd be. The hole is still there, and showing no signs of improving. We went back to our vet yesterday, and saw Dr. D. He flushed it out with the Zenodine really well. He thought that the interior "pocket" was much bigger than it was when we he saw it last Monday, and recommended that we have Dr. V put a drain tube in.

I have an appointment for Thursday with Dr. V to get that done.

This has been a rough couple days for me. Just feeling sorry for Sadie, for myself and the whole situation. It's been hard to keep negative thoughts out of my head and see an end in sight: changing bandages several times a day, seeing the doctor 4 times a week, keeping meds straight and cleaning up blood and vomit (and pee and poop from E) on a regular basis. Then there are the issues of keeping up the house, and trying to give attention to my girls as well as Doug.

In light of this, I made myself think of some positive things:
* Yesterday Sadie ate both meals without being hand-fed
* She's shown no signs of pain after being off pain-meds for 3 days
* There is no infection in the incision at all
* She's beginning to put a little weight back on her leg and toe-touching sometimes
* My dad's visit for a few days last week was a HUGE help
* Doug's been great at helping out with everything. What an awesome husband he is.

My comment is identical of Sabrina's! I'm interested in OAMC but I don't know anyone who does it and I don't know of any good resources. Email me or post on your blog. I'd love to hear from someone who does it.

Hi, I found your blog today when I googled Tightrope Recovey.
My dog had the same surgery done yesterday. She is home now and sleeping peacefully in her crate. I am sending prayers your way for Sadie.
I do agree with you that even with the healing issues you are experiencing now, you made the right choice. TPLO recovery probably would have been worse.
Big hugs for you and Sadie.
Marianne

You are so famous today!
I'm so sorry this recovery is taking longer than hoped. The whole things sounds incredibly stressful. ((hugs))

Dear Lori,

I, too, like Marianne, found your blog about Sadie as I have committed Tightrope surgery to my 2 1/2 year old red female Doberman next week. I am so grateful to you for providing all the details as, I am sure you well know, there is little information. I believe that you did the right thing in selecting the TIghtrope surgery over the TPLO. Having metal plates and screws can lead to cancers in canines. Since I found your blog on Sunday, I think of you and Sadie everyday...please keep up the communication about her recovery. Our challenge is that both my hubby and I work long hours and we're going to arrange to have people check in on her during the day. I have been told that the recovery is about 12+ weeks. (My girl has to have both knees done due to genetic arthritis and her love of catching frisbees and swimming (more like twirling) in her kiddie pool and at the lake with me. One suggestion I had from the vet tech was to buy a "Stupid Pet Tricks" book to keep her mind active teaching her things while her body cannot be active. Also stuffing bones/kongs with natural peanut butter or soft cheeses (it might help Sadie put on some weight too.) I found your technique of leashing her to a dumb bell quite unique!!!
